What is your ideology?

Man is a political animal. All people are political thinkers- We keep saying it, but how do we equip ourselves with the political thought? Where do we get our resources? Who inspires us to join a political debate and which side we take? All depends on our own experiences- seeing, reading, assumptions and the environment which we grow. But after certain age, when everything is put before us or come to an age where we can use our discretion, do we rethink on our initial beliefs? For example- We all are brought-up as believers; some people at the later stage change their belief system (I’m not terming that believing is right or wrong).

A simple exercise to judge your choice on which side you lean or your favorite political party lean is to plot it on the following linear spectrum of ideology,

In Orwellian terms, the left from the center propagates “All are equal” and the right from center propagates “Some are more equal than others”. This categorization holds good for social thoughts and beliefs too. If you think your religion/race/caste is superior to others, then you become a rightist (conservative). Post-Globalization the boundaries between these ideologies are grayed out. And, democracy even liquidates it further.

So what is your ideology?

Koko - A Pantomime in Tamil

After many years of living in Chennai, last weekend, I had my first experience of watching a live theater play.

If you are habituated to drive on your 2-wheeler only on the city roads and then some day had a chance to drive on a highway, for the first few miles you’ll feel some oddity to adjust to the highway heavy vehicle movement. This is how I felt when I started to the see the play. All these years, my eyes/brain was programmed to see only moving pictures in a dark hall, so now seeing the live characters were different when I saw them flesh and blood, that too few feet’s away from me. But after few minutes, I got adjusted and started to enjoy the place.

Pantomie is not a conventional play of what I thought. The story is told using different mediums. Koko is a Tamil pantomime; it is a mixture of dialogues, songs, magic, shadow play and even pyrotechnics.

The story, although targeted to kids, but seems to be directed towards parents and parenting. It talks about how not to pressurize and push the kids to learn something (which they are not interested). Sounds familiar pitch!. Yes, the difference is how it is presented to us in a fairy tale-ish way and different story telling methods.

After many hardships (Which is shown to us in shadow play), Chikki (Vikas), the hen, lay an egg. She befriends three guys- Rago, Bego and Tego (Siddharth, Naresh and Sujay- Not sure if I got the cast names right!). The egg is hatched after overcoming many sufferings; they name the new born as Koko (Subhasree). As all parents do, Chikki wants her kid all the best, she puts Koko is different schools and training. Koko finally breaks down in the pressure. Chikki realizes her mistake to give a moral end to the story.

There are 11 main characters and few sidekicks, but all the characters are played by only 6 actors. Meaning, they interchanged characters\costumes according to the scenes. Loads of back stage running and effort must have gone into it.

Since the lead character is a hen (Chikki), there are more cackles in the dialogues, which makes it fun and yet understandable by their acting.

Stage space is used intelligently and so the lighting. The focus light is used as an editing tool. For example, 4 characters on the stage, 2 on the left end and 2 on the right. When the light is focused on left it is scene 10-shot 1, when the light is focused on right (left is turned off) it is scene 11-shot 1. Again the left is turned on/right off. The shot number becomes incremental. In films this is inter-cut technique. Similarly, they used jump cut with three different shots.

Great work by the team.

-Naradha Gana Sabha was almost fully packed. Oh they still attract patrons.

Flashback

Thalaiku Vandadu Thalapagai Oda Pochi

It was around 4:30 PM today (23rd January), when I crossed Vadapalani signal. I was about to turn left at Thirunagar signal, noticing the further road was closed towards Koyambedu, I got curious. So, I parked my bike and started walking towards MMDA to see why there is a block.

At Thirunagar signal, I spotted some SUV’s, the guys there were wearing white shirts and pants, typical politician look, with thick moustache and big smartphone popping out of their shirt pocket. They were asking their men to redirect the traffic from Vadapalani towards Periyar Pathai, not allowing them to MMDA. As I walked past them, after Arumbakkam Metro, there were some 150-200 people standing in the MMDA signal. Banners about jallikattu.

On the middle of the road, there were 5-10 men and women, who were shouting slogans for jallikattu and against police lathi charge. The women were sari clad, around 35-40 years and men were around 40 years, heavily bearded, veshti and lungi clad. Are they students or youth? May be muthior kalvi. There were other protestors, a big group on the other side of the road, opposite to Vallavan hotel. In this set of people, there were young people too, but on the whole I don’t see any similarities in them when compared to the original students/youth at Marina or other place.

I can easily relate them to the kind of people, who are paid by political parties in their meeting, like in Tamil Kaasuku Allu Setha Kuttam. I was seeing all these at a distance (my building strong’u basement weaku). A vehicle was surrounded by the big group, an onlooker next to me said that must a police vehicle, in few minutes, there was a smoke. He said they had torched it. As the flames started, the big group tried to spread out, fearing it might burst (It eventually did burst later).

The onlooker standing next to me said we have to move as it is not safe. The big crowd spread, they were walking to the side of the road where I was standing, and, someone noticed the nearby apartment, which was behind me. The apartment tenants were filming the ablaze in their mobile. The crowd demanded them not to take pictures and hurled stones on the building. Stones whizzed past my head. An IT company bus front glass was broken. Another bus (college) driver reversed his bus in hurry. Thalaiku vandadu thalapagai oda pogatum’nu I started to move.

Some northeast guys took pictures too; our esteemed elderly youths grabbed their phones and deleted the pics.

End Note- All this was organized, by people who are habituated with this kind of acts. Blocking traffic at the exact place, not allowing others to take pic and zero conviction to the cause, but only to damage public and private property. As Gounder used to say, mosa pudikura naaya munchiya patha theriyadu.

This is my experience, I cannot vouch for other unruly incidents in the city. Whether all places had these kind of  Vishamigal, I leave it to your judgement.

Pallavar Varalaru - Book

I always had a second-thought to read about the history of Tamil kings and kingdoms, because the very first chapter will be filled with bragging words, chest thumping and some unverified information like Kumarikandam or Lemuria kandam. I had to get past through all these to find an interesting reading.

In this book, Pallavar Varalaru, R. Mannar Mannan starts with the introduction of three great kingdoms of Tamilagam (Note, I’m not using Tamil Nadu which will confuse you to the modern Indian state). The book divides Pallavas into three era- Early Pallavas, Medieval and Later (or last), their periods are respectively, 250-340 CE, 340-515 CE and 515 CE-9th century. (The famous shore temple was built at the last Pallava era).

The book briefly talks about various Pallavan kings, like Mahendravarman, Nandhivarman..

A fascinating story about the Pallava king named Nandhivarman III. After his father death Nandhivaraman came to power. His father had another wife and a son named Gunamagan. At first, Gunamagan was not interested to rule, later he got the desire to rule. He fought with Nandhivaraman and lost. Gunamagan had poetic skills and Nandhivaraman had an ear to hear good literary work. So Gunamagan wrote verses praising about Nandhivarman. He didn’t directly send it to Nandhivarman, but made sure few verses reached him indirectly. The ministers later informed these verses are written by his rival Gunamagan and the composition is named as Nandhi Kalambagam. Nandhivaraman became curious and want to hear full work from Gunamagan itself, for which Gunamagan put some condition. Nandhivaraman had to be seated on the grave in graveyard. In spite of the advice from the ministers he proceeded. Gunamagan on his end of his recital sang Kaiyurunilai, which is sung after kings death. Nandhivaraman after hearing it became so excited and ordered his minsters to immolate him in fire. They did so and he died. But Gunamagan effort went in vain, the kingship was not given to him.

Al though the book is about Pallavar history, it also talks about Cholas. The author puts Cholas and Pallavas had close relationship. In fact Pallavas had hereditary ties with Cholas. Pallavas then moved north of Tamilagam and established their kingdom from south of Andhra. Reading this book or any Sangam literature related books one will get confused, as all four kingdoms (Chera, Cholla, Pandiyas, and Pallavas) had fought amongst them and one king had won other three at different times.

To write all these, the author quotes various copper-plates (Seppedu), pattayam, Sangam literature and bhakthi literature. He also writes how difficult it is to prove the events in Sangam literature without proper archeological evidences. The author also acknowledges that the British first started their archeological excavations in Madras presidency, but in later independence India, Tamil Nadu was the most neglected state.

Cholas were influenced by Pallavas when it came to rock architecture (Temples). Thanjavur Brahadeeswarar temple was built with same architectural plan of Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram, which in turn is based on the Kanchipuram Kailasanathar temple.

There is an interesting chapter which connects with Pallavas with Cambodia. Different tax systems in Pallava era is discussed, ஊடுபோக்கு (Oodupooku)- This is like the modern day road toll. They also had taxes for water usage for agriculture and sales tax. The other topics discussed are religion (Indra vizha and how Vaishnavam hijacked Indira and placed Krishna), language (Grantham) usage during the Pallava period.

Travel to Read People

Henry David Thoreau said “It is not worth to go round the world to count the cats in Zansibar“, I couldn’t guess why and which context he said the above lines, but the initial impression it gives is he was not fond of travelling. When we look at his life history, he lived most of life at Massachusetts, to be more specific in Concord. But, yet by his thoughts and writing influenced people like Leo, Mohandas and Martin.

The quote was Thoreau perspective, while I don’t enthusiastically endorse it, predominantly, majority of people don’t travel much. There have various reasons to put them in a single place for their life time. Some do travel, as an excursion. Trying t escape from the hard days of work, this will happen infrequently. These excursions are like sight-seeing. Pick 2-3 major spots, travel there, see (not observe) and come back to the groove. And, there is a niche section of travelers, who go to a place, observe it, understand it and learn from the places. S. Ramakrishnan belongs to the latter category. This book, Dheshanthri is a textual documentation of the places of his visit and the people he met in his journey.

You can throw an argument- He is a writer and he is bound to observe the nuances which will assist his writings. Yes, here is the exercise. We all had visited to Mahabalipuram. Can you tell (without googling) in which century the shore temple was built? I’m not even asking for the specific year. 9/10 people fail in this exercise.

The book doesn’t have photos of the places visited, at first I was first disappointed, but as I moved after the initial chapters of the book, I realized photos are not necessary. His writings were clearly descriptive and moreover he is connecting us with the people who are living there and the history associated with the places. He doesn’t throw more factual information. He lets us know, what we supposed to know. He puts the social context first, and then the contextual information.

On his visit to Palani, the following passage describes the mise-en-scene of the place.

It’s not the group of people alone; he observes and talks with individuals. Here, he is chatting with a girl who is grazing goats near Nallathangal well.

Don’t expect only famous places in this book. The author travels to less visited places like Nalathangal well, Koovagam festival, Odessa Film movement, Kayatharu, Ramanujam house…

Also, the author writes about the difficulties faced by modern travelers who are at the constant watch of the doubtful police eyes, particularly in North India.

The non-availability of photos is substituted by the illustrations from Magi.

Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru - Attempted Rashomon-effect

When did I critique a newly released Tamil film? It was in August 2015 on the film Bahubali. If you are following my blog, you can seldom see my posts on new releases. I write only when I wholly liked or disliked the movie. And, these writings are not reviews, just my thoughts on the film.

**Possible Spoilers Ahead**

Now, this film, hope many had seen it as it is on its third week run in the theaters and after new Pongal releases, it may be taken off the screens. Having not seen much Tamil film last year, I feel this kind story-telling is a new entry in Tamil Cinema. 105 minutes, no (romantic) songs, no song buildups, no comedy, no fights, no major stars. It is all pure story telling. Yes, the climax will be little let down or cliché.

There is a saying, cinema is suspension of disbelief. This theory is applicable to all kinds of cinema- when bullets are dodged, trains are stopped at the tip of finger, love-at-fist-sight, etc., and the list is endless.

Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru (D16), plants a belief in the viewer in the initial scenes. We are made to believe that there is a serial killer. Almost the entire film we are kept in hooks about the serial killer. The fag end we have a turn to enter into climax. Even the characters talk about serial-killer and the belief is planted hard inside us!

"My friend said this is a rehash of a Hollywood movie 11:14. I haven’t seen it. So if you’ve seen, let me know the similarities.

The film starts like a cop movie. The characterization of Deepak (Rahaman) is built by showing him as a straight-talk police inspector. Every instance he corrects his fellow policemen on their misgivings. As the investigation continues on the initial crimes, the flow moves into Rashomon-effect, but not entirely into Rashomon-effect.

Now with the characters interpreting the crime in different views, the viewer might be confused, so here after just almost half-way of the film, every scene is rewinded for us. Deepak asks Gautham (Constable assisting him in solving the crime) to rewind the entire events (literally the film) chronologically.

More to write, but I need to catch my dinner, so see you at my next film post.
